              Procreation (Punsavan)

The child in its mother's womb has to develop in two ways. One is its physical development; the other is its intellectual development or the growth of its mind. For physical, development, 'Procreation ceremony (Punsavan Sanskar)  has  been suggested. The objective of Procreation ceremony is to  draw attention of the mother for the physical fitness of the child  in its womb.

Procreation rituals are done to keep in mind the important things that parents should know (1) what is the indication of confirmed conception (2) what precautions are required so that the embryo is not destroyed (3) what medicine and treatment is required by the mother so that the child's physical development is proper (4) what nourishment should be taken by the mother for the development of the child.

We will discuss Precautions for the Pregnant women

Charak Samhitaa has mentioned about such precautions and nourishment as are to be taken by the expectant mother so that there may not be any possibility or danger of abortion and the embryo may be strong and healthy.

The following actions are forbidden: the pregnant woman squatting, strolling in uneven places, sitting on a hard seat, controlling gas, stools, urine flow; undergoing hard labor, getting hurt, pressure on the womb of any kind, eating very hot or very spicy things or remaining acutely hungry.

Negative emotions are to be avoided at all times.

The following are the ways in which the emotions of the expectant mother may influence her child:

If during her pregnancy, she has a very busy sexual life, then the child born may be full of lust and passion. If she is always depressed, then the child may be timid, fearful, weak and of short life. If she has her eyes on the wealth of others, then the offspring may be jealous, a thief, lazy, rebellious and of evil intent. If she is of an angry temperament, then the child born may be short-tempered, deceptive and one who always backbites. If she is always sleeping, then the child born may be lazy, stupid and impotent.

If she is used to drinking alcohol, then the child born may be of a restless frame of mind. If she eats too many sweets, then the child may have poor immunity.  If she eats too many sour things, then the child may have skin problems. If she eats too much salt, then the child may have pre-mature illnesses and pre-mature ageing diseases.  If she eats too much spicy food, then the child may be weak and short-tempered.  If she eats too much of very bitter foods, then the child may have dry skin and be lean and thin. So extremities are to be avoided.

The bottom line is that the mother should avoid negative emotions and eat food in balance.
