      Herbs (Ayurvedic medicines used)in  pregnancy

Many of the toxic symptoms can be avoided if good practices are adopted during pregnancy. To aid in good health of both the mother and child, the root of one commonly found  herb called Sida acuta or alnifolia is used throughout pregnancy. This is especially valuable in women who have more tendency to give birth to pre-term babies and also have threatened abortions. This herb can be used as such or can be used in combination with other herbs as given below. 

Sida acuta or Sida alnifolia root

Synonyms 1.Sida retusa. Linn.
2.Sida rhombifolia. retusa (Linn). Mast.
3.Sida rhombifolia .sub sp restusa (Linn). Bross.

This  herb is highly praised in Ayurveda to be used throughout pregnancy for the strength of the foetus and gives good immunity to the child. In Sanskrit the name of this herb is called as "Bala", which means strength.

Its use in pregnancy strengthens the uterine muscles, promotes easy labour, and prevents abortion. Reduces the tiredness and insomnia during pregnancy and prevents cramps during pregnancy.

Use of this herb in Pregnancy: Grind 15 grams of this herb and place it in a cotton bag (pouch) and drop in 150 ml of milk and 600 ml water and boil it, till the contents reduces to  150ml. Drink this herbal milk before going to bed. 

 In Ashtanga-Hridhyam, an Ayurvedic text followed in Kerala, India and used for many centuries, along with this herbs other herbs are recommended for specific months. If  you cannot other  herbs mentioned below then just use the above herb alone.

Second Month Thiruthaali (Manthrogora officianalum) and or Pushkaramoolam Casearia esculenta
Third Month Putharichunda  (Solanum indicum) and or Kandakaarichunda (
Solanum Xanthocarpum)
Fourth Month orila-veru (root of Desmodium Gangeticum)
Fifith Month Chitamrithu (Tinospora cordifolia)
Sixth Month kandakaarichunda (Solanum Xanthocarpum)
Seventh Month Barley (Yavam)
Eigth Month Perum kurumba root (Chonemorpha fragranse)
Nineth Month sathavarikizhangu (Asparagus racemosus - root)

Women who follow Pancha Bhoota Balanced diet, do not need these herbal preparations. It also does  not harm to these age-old medications that Indian women had been using for centuries without any pregnancy complications. These medications give health to mother and the child.
