Glycemic index of foods

How good is to follow glycemic index of foods?
Some carbohydrates break down quickly during digestion and can raise blood glucose to dangerous levels. These are the foods that have higher glycemic indexes. Other carbohydrates break down more slowly, releasing glucose gradually into our blood streams and are said to have lower glycemic indexes.

The glycemic index should not be your only criterion when selecting what to eat. The total amount of carbohydrate, the amount and type of fat, and the fiber and salt content are also important dietary considerations. The glycemic index is most useful when deciding which high-carbohydrate foods to eat.

What to eat in diabetes?
Eat whole foods. Avoid refined foods. Consume more fruits and vegetables and don’t forget to eat all the varieties. Don’t eat anything routinely. Follow the season and eat those that are abundant in that season. This will save you money and also get you fresh foods.

Specific foods and recipes for diabetes are found in Sakthi's kitchen. Those who eat bread and pastas, tortillas etc use whole wheat or whole rice products. Avoid products that contain cornstarch and corn syrup. These changes alone will bring you great changes in diabetes.

Low fat foods are highly dangerous:

Low fat foods contain low fat , but to give taste, the food companies add starchy materials to give texture and taste. These starchy corn syrups enter our body and are converted into fats.. This is doubly dangerous because first it increases blood sugar so rapidly that it cause stress to pancreas to secrete more insulin. Next the excess glucose is converted into fat in the liver , increasing fat content in our body. (details in cholesterol clinic).

Beware of foods that contain starches (like corn syrup and corn starches). These are added to many breakfast cereals, breads, low fat yogurt, low fat ice-creams, cookies, pastries, confectionary items etc. These products are not good for healthy as well as diabetics.

Therefore  eating low fat foods are the mean way to cheat ourselves but straining our body. Low fat foods are not the solution to health problems. Whole foods and unrefined foods are the real solution to treat diseases like diabetes, cholesterol, hyper tension and cancer.
